2015 XC Coach BIO
I need a better picture, but this one was from a 2000 meter steeplechase I did at an all-comers meet at Saint Francis about 5 years ago. I had never done a steeplechase of any kind. It was only 5 laps but I got lapped by a college runner! I didn't trip over any barriers or fall in the water jump, at least.
NAME: George Wehrle-Coach
1. Date of Birth: 10/02/1967
2. Hobbies/Interests (besides running!): Not sure they are hobbies exactly, but I enjoy reading, exercising, all things related to Star Trek, 80's pop culture/music, and following the great sports of xc/track and field.
3. Favorite Subject(s) in school: Back then: English, History, Physical Education
4. Favorite tv show(s): "Star Trek" (all the series), "Deadwood", "Justified", "The Simpson's", "Jeopardy"
5. Favorite book or books: "Into the Wild", "A Walk in the Woods", "Shadow Divers", plus a slew of running books and assorted magazines.
6. Most memorable running moment (so far): For my own running it would probably be racing in the Groundhog 50k's back in the early 2000's. The feeling of accomplishment at the finish is pretty hard to replicate. As far as coaching it might be winning xc districts in 2009 despite having one of our top runners fail to finish the race because of the brutal conditions. I thought for sure we had lost and was very surprised to find out otherwise.
7. Favorite Running Partner(s): None at this time as I mostly run alone, but Keith Hughes and I had some good conversations when we were running the 50k and would meet almost every weekend for a long run.
8. Favorite place you ran this summer: Eugene, Oregon had some "landmarks" like Pre's Rock and Trail, but my favorite places to run are still in the back woods behind the high school and the trails behind the Buffalo Lodge in Rossiter.
9. Favorite place to eat: Laska's Pizza, with other local Pizza places a close second. Pizza is our weekly "splurge" I guess.
10. Athlete/runner (s) you admire?: Runners I liked as a high schooler/young adult-Jim Ryun, Marty Liquori, Craig Virgin, Pat Porter, Alberto Salazar, Jim Spivey, Steve Scott, Joe Falcon, Todd Williams, John Trautmann, to name a few. As I get older it's harder to admire current athletes, in my opinion, but I do like Galen Rupp and Matt Centrowitz for their sustained excellence.
11. Favorite game or sport (besides running): Tennis, Bicycling, Basketball, Frisbee
12. Best thing about running in your opinion: The feeling of accomplishment from a hard workout or any run, really. Getting outside and running in the woods or whatever nature is around.
