This Saturday the Punxsy girls cross country team heads to the 2016 District 9 Cross Country Championships meet held in Ridgway. Bradford and Saint Marys are favored to compete for the team title and the qualifying trip to the PIAA state meet in Hershey on November 5th. “Saint Marys has the top two runners in the district in Michelle Bauer and Amanda Foster and looks to be strong enough depth-wise to be tough to beat. They were the top AA team at the Ridgway Invitational three weeks ago.” Punxsy and Clearfield look to challenge for the third and fourth positions, with Karns City rounding out the field of five AA teams.
Depending upon who wins the team title, the next five non-team individuals will earn a trip to the state meet. Karns City’s Rebecca Pennington, Punxsutawney’s Isabel Hackenberry , and Abby Laborde of Clearfield are all ranked in the top 10 and are expected to be competing for one of the five spots. “Isabel has really had an impressive year. With a consistent race, she should secure her first trip to the state meet.”
Ranked 14th overall, Jenna Barnoff has a chance to place in the top ten, possibly even challenge for one of the state qualifying spots. “Jenna had a breakout race at districts last year improving her ranking by eleven places. I look for her to run her best on Saturday.”
Gabby Franklin and Hayley Dilts are ranked 19th and 20th, while Madison Stonbraker and Alyse Whitman are ranked 24th and 30th. “Gabby and Hayley ran their seasonal bests on this course three weeks ago. I fully expect them to run tough races and move up at least two places each.” “Madison has been back to form lately in practice. I think she will really be at her best on Saturday and move up significantly.” “Alyse has fully returned from her injury and seems prepared to take on the distance on Saturday. She definitely has the talent and ability to make a difference for the team.”
Punxsy’s next two runners Jaci Mennetti and Sophia Lambiotte are ranked 42nd and 43rd. “Both girls are truly focused on their time goals going into districts.”
“For the past five months these girls have shown serious dedication to their sport. They each have made nice progress throughout the season and I look forward to seeing what they do with the opportunity they are given this weekend.”
