Punxsy Girls XC Falls to Dubois
The Punxsy girls cross country team raced at Wasson Elementary in Dubois competing in their first 5k of the season against Dubois, Elk County Catholic and Dubois Central Catholic. Conditions were extremely challenging for all runners with temperatures nearing 90 degrees on a rather hilly course. “The Dubois girls team has a very strong pack of front runners that I knew would be challenging but it would also give the girls something to strive for. ECC has two talented runners that I knew would be near the front pack as well.” “Considering the difficult course and temperatures I was glad to see the girls run so well. I expected our times to be slightly slower, but I am still happy with their performances for their first 5k this year.”
Leading the pack of Punxsy runners was Isabel Hackenberry and Alyse Whitman. Whitman started out with the Dubois pack of runners and Hackenberry followed right along with her. “They both ran very close to Dubois 3rd through 5th runners, which is something we weren’t able to do last year.” “Alyse had some trouble in the final half mile of the race due to the heat and wasn’t able to finish, but I fully expect her to be right there with Isabel on Saturday.” Hackenberry finished 7th with a time of 23:07, which was a 90 second improvement compared to her time last year on this same course.
Running together not too far behind Hackenberry and Whitman were Jenna Barnoff, Madison Stonbraker, Gabby Franklin and Hayley Dilts. “These girls moved nicely together across the course, really pushing each other and working together right to the finish. I know these girls are working super hard and want to try to make their way closer to the first two girls.” Barnoff was Punxsy’s number two finisher clocking a time of 25:02 in 12th place. “Jenna is showing some senior leadership in trying to help move this group along together.” Punxsys number three finisher was Stonbraker. She crossed the line only seconds behind Barnoff in a time of 25:06 good enough for 13th place. Gabby Franklin was right behind Stonbraker as the fourth Punxsy finisher in a time of 25:08 in 14th place. “Madison and Gabby are very competitive, I look forward to watching these girls race more.” The fifth Punxsy scorer was Dilts in a time of 25:48 in 15th place. “These girls saw how helpful running together can be. It will be nice to see as they get stronger how they can move their group up in position.”
Punxsy’s next two finishers were Sophia Lambiotte in a time of 34:02 in 32nd place and Jaci Mennetti finishing 33rd in 35:29 . “These two girls ran extremely competitive at our relay meet on Friday. I think once they can race as they did on Friday, they will make a jump towards the teammates that are ahead of them.”
“Hopefully we can regroup from today and focus our sights on running some better times and tightening our group from our first to sixth runners.”
Punxsy next competes at the Big Red Invitational held at West Middlesex High School on Saturday.
