The Punxsy girls cross country team traveled to Brookville Area Junior-Senior High School to race against Brookville, Bradford and Ridgway. The Punxsy girls were able to prevail against the lady raiders by a score of 22-33, however lost a close one to the top ranked AA District 9 team of Bradford by a score of 23-32. “The loss to Bradford was much closer than it looks in the score. Our 3-5 runners finished almost on top of each other and were only three seconds away from pulling out a win over a strong Bradford team.”
“We came into this meet with our plan of going out in the first mile a little bit more conservative again, then racing for position against Bradford for the final two miles. The girls followed through even better than planned and finished with some very solid races.” “Brookville has a rather hilly and difficult course. It is definitely one that is going to challenge even the best runners. For the girls to race the way they did today proves they have what it takes to challenge the other teams in the district.”
Isabel Hackenberry was Punxsy’s first finisher placing first overall in a time of 22:56. “Isabel ran exceptionally smart today staying with Bradford’s top two girls until just past the two mile mark, then she pushed the pace and put some distance between herself and the next runner. She is starting to race to her full potential, which is putting her right near the top individuals in the district.”
Punxsy’s second runner was Jenna Barnoff, who finished 5th overall in a time of 24:33. “Jenna is getting over a sickness but definitely didn’t let that hold her back as she was able to finish ahead of Bradford’s number three runner by almost 30 seconds.”
Punxsy’s next three runners were nearly tripping over each other coming in to the finish within the span of one second. Leading the group was Hayley Dilts, who finished 11th overall in a time of 25:27. “Hayley is racing really consistently and seems poised for a big drop in time.”
Punxsy’s fourth finisher coming in 12th overall in a time of 25:28 was Madison Stonbraker. “Madison ran an excellent time on this course and continues to stay extremely consistent. With the right conditions I see her making a huge improvement in her time.”
Finishing fifth for Punxsy was Gabby Franklin in 13th overall with a time of 25:28. “Gabby too has been batting a cold, but she really helped the team by staying with Madison and Hayley. She is a true team player.”
Rounding out Punxsy’s runners was Jaci Mennetti who finished 34th overall in a time of 33:44. “Jaci finished with a new seasonal best on a rather difficult course. She was definitely much more competitive today.”
“Punxsy’s dual meet record now goes to 5-3; however the close loss to Bradford should prove to these girls that they are much stronger now. The girls are making some steady improvements, and I am extremely proud of their efforts every day.”
Punxsy’s travels to the PIAA Foundations Meet on Saturday at Hershey, where they will square off against 32 other AA teams on the same course that the State cross country race will be held on November 5th. “I am hoping that going to this race will be extremely motivating for the girls, as well as give them an opportunity to run on the course that they strive to race on at the end of the season.”
